decaying frames. friday finds.

These three old pieces were found in a neglected pile of photo frames at an op-shop late last year, and this week I dug them out and filled them.

WHY DO YOU LIKE THEM?

I find genuine old picture frames are hard to leave in junk shops. I love the decaying characteristics of them - broken bits of plaster moulding, wrinkly paper inserts and rusting wires. Occasionally you will find them with an antique photo still enclosed, which of course begs the question about who the person was and what sort of life they lived.

WHAT TO DO ? with an old picture frame...

Old frames of course look good grouped together as they help marry the rustic look you want to achieve. You can fill them with all sorts of memorabilia or collected papers... perhaps a hand-written note that means allot to you, perhaps an envelope that contained a significant document. Other ideas include, music sheets, feathers, collected antique postcards, and I even have an old white frame in which I stuck a series of sea shells. 

These frames I filled with the original card/paper backing sheets, overlayed with graph paper cut into squares and finished with a series of gift cards (cut in half) with a botanical theme. [GIFT CARDS BY LAUREN HINKLEY]

The joy of a trip to the beach! Don't you love it?

I feel a blend of peacefulness and freedom wash over me when I visit. Even if I don't go for a swim, just sitting on the shore is therapeutic. Helps me re-set my thinking and soothes the soul.

Yesterday morning we took ourselves down to 'Little Cove' on the Noosa Headland. The tide was high and the waves crashed and foamed around the smooth, dark rocks. We watched and waited for the tide to recede a little before we could hop in. Not too much sand for the little guys to drive their monster truck or build castles at first. But there were great waves for body boarding - just a few spills and some tears - but mostly big fun.

Our trip coincided with the day five #febphotoaday challenge: 10am. So here it is.

Today's post is more of a general one than a specific item as I have collected quite a stash of white linens... and I think they are all so lovely. 

WHY DO YOU LIKE THEM ? Quality vintage & antique linens really are such a classic addition to any home. White tablecloths, napkins, sheets, pillowcases, guest towels and hankies are lovely to hold but can also be very practical. I think they should be used - not tucked away in a linen press to gather yellow age spots or musty smells.

One of the best things about them is that quality linens actually wash and wear so well. Food stains, dust or hand towel marks can most of the time, be easily be soaked out in Nappy San. I've had guests very apologetic about food spills on a tablecloth - and I try to assure them that it's fine - they really do wash out.

The other endearing quality is their hand-sewn elements. Time that went into delicate needlework, monograms that indicated ownership, and the character of these pieces from days gone by. Their stories make them collectable.

WHAT TO DO? White linens can be creatively used in the home. Single sheets can be used as tablecloths for long dining tables, some tablecloths lend themselves to being a bedspread, guest towels and napkins can be used as bedside table cloths or curtains for a small window. Go ahead... break the rules of keeping them for 'special occasions' and use them how you wish.

Thomas Corner Eatery is one of my favourite spots for a special meal near where I live. After being treated to a birthday lunch there recently with my family, including my adorable niece, I thought I'd share more about it here with you.

This little book brings me joy. It has been in my collection since my first son was born - I have read it's messages daily from time to time over the years. This year I have picked it up again. Short, powerful messages for each day - ones that lift me up and challenge me to grow. To Trust more.

Turns out my precious Nana used to have one too. Mum tells me it was one of her favourite devotionals.

pot o' tea? friday finds.

This week I added one more to my collection of enamel teapots. I like this one as it is a little bit different to others I have seen. It features a glass top lid and tea straining insert device to sit the leaves in while it brews. Smart huh?

WHY DO YOU LIKE IT?  My collection started when my mum bought my son one as a teapot for the sandpit. It survived remarkably well and now holds a succulent plant. Since then I have grown to love the worn enamel texture and shapes of these pieces. Their unique handles at the side and on top are also endearing. So now the collection has grown and has featured in various ways for display and purpose at my shop and at home.

WHAT TO DO? with an enamel teapot... make tea (of course!), use it as a watering can, sit it amongst your potted plants, drill a hole or two in the base & plant a succulent in it, store trinkets in it (like buttons or jewellery), or put your marble collection in it (like my four year old has on occasion), sit a tea light inside them... and the list goes on.
One day I plan to string a few of mine up in the garden as an installation.

a couple of new skills i have been working on over the last weeks of the holidays which are making me glad... 1. baking bread 2. making coffee (more on this later).

here are the latest results of the bread-making. using a basic recipe for no-knead bread, today i made a loaf with dates and hazelnuts in it. it turned out better than expected as i wasn't sure how adding the extra nuts and fruit would affect the consistency.

it is a damper-type bread, quite moist and heavy (especially if you make it with half wholemeal flour), but you can experiment with it how you like and be confident it will still work. i have also successfully used organic wholemeal spelt flour too, which tasted a bit like light rye.

i had seen the recipe a while back, but needed a cast iron pot to try it. whilst visiting my family at christmas, my brother-in-law showed us one he got from ALDI so i went and got one too...(they might still have a few in stock?). so far it has been fun experimenting with ideas and sharing results with family members... i think we all got the bread baking bug!

hello good people...

this post finds me at the end of a chapter. it has taken me all week to put something up here, because I am not sure what to say. it's a mixed time - happiness at creating something - sadness to step aside from it for a time. 

the thing that has made it such a great experience? the people! all of you who read the blog, visit me at the stall, email, shop on-line, friends & family who support me with their time, energy and encouragement. thank-you!

this extra cool (un-prompted) illustration was created on monday night by my mr t who is 4 years old.  it is so special to me and i have been really touched by my sons' interest in 'mummy's shop'. i can see they too, have collected some good memories from this experience.

what now?

so, basically we won't be at the peregian beach markets anymore with sunny to sell our vintage wares, but we will still be here at the blog and hanging out in the shop. we have a couple of other projects brewing, and they will take more definite shape next year. can't wait to share them with you all.

for now we will be taking some time out for holidays and family. some exciting trips planned! and i hope to stop in and share some of it with you.

This week in our shop we have some lovely new skirts for layering - perfect for our hot australian summer. Sheer cotton in white, Sheer silk in dusty rose and this fun striped carnival skirt in coral.

Early this week I snuck down here again to meet up with two special ladies and go see 'Henri Cartier-Bresson'... a photographic exhibition that documents his life's work and the huge variety of subjects across the world with which he worked. Well worth the trip for anyone who loves such iconic photography and an insight into the life and perspective of such an incredible talent.

'I just love your stuff... where have you been?!...' I think were about the first words I spoke to the lovely Millie.

This girl has an amazing sense of style and the attention to details in her work are what makes it so original and lovable.

We only met a couple of weeks back at the peregian beach markets when i went for a wander to spy out goodies at some of the other stalls that day. Of course it just happened to be her first market at Peregian (she usually does The Village Markets @ Burleigh Heads).

So - at this point I was equally excited about her stuff and sad that we wouldn't have a chance to be neighbours with 'Sunny' the caravan since i am finishing up at the markets in December. boo.

Turns out this lass is more than a clever designer & seamstress ... she also generates really cool art, graphic design work and amazing photography...

and has recently published a photojournal called 'bone.twig.salt. feather.trash.' to document 10 years of her stunning images. You can find them along with a selection of her clothing here in her on-line store.

The thing that strikes me about her is her passion for life which flows through what she puts out there PLUS the hard work she has put in to make it happen - something indie-business owners can fully understand (and that is a whole 'nother post in itself).

But there you go... I hope you enjoyed my brief introduction to "an... artist, rambler, photographer, sea dweller & gypsy-pirate, Millie Fairhall."

baby it's hot outside today. but even on a day like today, homemade pikelets with a cup o tea do the trick. jam &  butter atop a fluffy centre goes down a treat.

hard to stop at just two. the boys & i ate more!

recipe = 1 egg lightly beaten + 1 cup SR flour + 1 cup milk. whisk until smooth + cook in spoonfuls on a medium heat non-stick pan.

loving some of the design and furniture elements of this stylish new york apartment... as featured in the christmas edition of inside out.  

the salavaged items and hand constructed pieces are inspiring... i love the combination of the twig with the hand-dyed sheer curtain for the bathroom, and the bed cushions and the ladder and the windsor chair and the list goes on ....but oh those tall light-bearing windows! what an amazing space... the bare apartment would almost look just as good.

It's another world I'd like to escape to for a time... where people serve in hats, vests and ties. Part of the cafe looks like the interior of an impressive library (perhaps this is the hotel lobby) but still. Their other locations around the country look just as dreamy.

The prompt for unearthing stumptown was a gift from my big sisters' recent trip to the US. Another little beauty for my growing collection... plus these. Thanks sis!

while on another meander around the on-line treasury of design and creatives on the internet earlier this morning, i discovered this.

est magazine is a new-ish (am i the last to hear of it?) digital magazine featuring 'global living with an australian twist'. such a visual treat to browse through. the spread above in particular caught my eye when i saw it at sfgirlbybay.

i was particularly pleased to read up about coin laundry, an uber-cool cafe in melbourne which i nearly hung out the window admiring as we drove past it in february this year. we were headed along the armadale street to see where my mum used to live as a little girl (including during WWII which is another story in itself) ...

but yes, the cafe looked so smart and very popular indeed. we made dad drive past it again so that we could snap a few pics - but these ones (plus others) from the magazine do it much more justice! hopefully one day i will return to enjoy a meal there.

The garden here is bursting forth with greenery and blossoms. This past week has seen the explosion of white stars thick amongst the heavy vines. Like it's cousin, this star jasmine bloom really brings out the simple joy of spring in the garden. A little bit of care, snipping and water brings generous results.

The agapanthus is also coming out of it's cocoon. Against the backdrop of the jasmine it is a pleasant sight and one that has brought me joy this mixed monday.

it's been a while since i've got busy getting my hands dirty with fixing up furniture. i took a bit of a break from it after our big event earlier this year. i needed a breather.

but boy do these chairs deserve some attention. whilst they became our dining chairs some time back, they have never received the 'fix up' i promised. so this week i took them out and began the process. you know the one where you find yourself saying...'things must get worse before they can get better' (actually it's quite a common phrase of mine).

so they have potential to be quite a set of handsome chairs don't you think? lots of sanding, polishing together with some re-upholstery ahead of me. quite a labour of love, really, but one that i enjoy.

sparking my creativity and leading me off on good trails of discovery on the web this week, is the recent issue of extracurricular, which I picked up whilst holidaying in NNSW last week.  feels a bit like a cross between peppermint and mixtape zine - featuring designers, artists and indie businesses. based in new zealand, it contains cool talent and industrie from both australia and new zealand...  (aren't these clever?) 

a nice little read including a handy 'stitch guide' by the ever-popular tiny happy.

found my copy at the new (nearly-opened) 'One Fine Day' handmade shop (pictured at top) located in station street, bangalow NSW.... filled with handmade, paper and vintage goodies- it feels a little bit like stepping inside a frankie magazine! do pop by if you get the chance.

Hello. We're back.

Anyone familiar with NNSW would know where these pics are taken. It's a stunning part of eastern australia and the sort of countryside you lose track of time and what day of the week it is. busy-ness takes a back seat.

Our spring break was a lovely parcel of time - special time together as a family, visiting friends and precious loved ones, trips to the beach, the park, a surprise birthday party and an anniversary trip. (plus an unexpected visit from the POX - just to keep up life's little surprises!)

But our little anniversary getaway took us back to familiar territory in NNSW, and the wonderful accommodation near the sea we stayed in felt like it became 'ours'. Sad for it to be over. Hoping to re-visit someday soon.

i never grow tired of trips to the sea. the textures of the sand, water and the sky are always different... and there are always treasures to be found.

these shells i have not seen before - they are quite tiny and their design is so delicate. hard not to pop a few in a pocket.

Yesterday at our market stall I received a gift from one of my customers, Nola. What a sweetie... she dropped in to say hello and give me this book, which she thought I would like. The illustrations in it are lovely and my boys and I enjoyed reading it last night.

It really made my day, as I had a few funny/bad things happen on Saturday which made me seriously consider not going yesterday. But not one to give in easily... I persisted. The sunshine and the generosity of others made it a day worth doing!

It's a good reminder how something simple can mean allot to someone else. Perhaps today it is my turn to pass on something unexpectedly good to another...

Speaking of women of courage... this lovely lady is just that. I was lucky to meet Beatrice 'Beattie' Lanser late last week and our little chat in her gorgeous shop left me feeling just that little bit more upbeat. 

"She makes clothes for men and women. Good fabrics...good prints...good design... good colours. She likes fabrics that feel good on human being’s bodies. She thinks that clothes need to be versatile and totally wearable and hopefully freeing. She makes things with her hands and her heart – for people." [here]

Her wonderful handmade clothing line was amazing to see in real life and to hear more about her adventure into a retail space was encouraging. I first read about Beattie here earlier this year and as luck would have it I managed a visit to her store on our day trip to Manly while I was in Sydney (including a purchase of one of these lovelies).

This very quaint mail box caught my eye at our local recycling centre a couple of months back. It has the sweetest little handmade 'flag' mechanism for letting you know that there is mail inside... and the flag drops back down once you have retrieved the letters. Great huh?

Which brings me to one of the things I am grateful for this week.

My blog is an expression of the things I find joy and purpose in. It reflects my creative pursuits, and it is a little window to the ideas that bounce around in my heart and my head. And so, it is quite moving when I receive a personal email and gifts by post from people who look and read what I write. Thank-you Sarah and Rochelle for your gifts of words and encouragement this week. It means allot.

So... the number on the front will have to be changed, but this beauty is destined for my front fence (eek- the existing maroon & gold one has been lucky not to have been fired before now). 

In the past month or so you may have also spotted my mailbox in service with smart handmade goods here... and here. She's travelled around a bit, but I'll show you a pic when she's  all settled into her new home.

found a few weeks back these large spools of cotton and wool have started somewhat of a new collection. i have since found some in a soft grey and a vivid red that are both pure wool. i like the textures of the yarn and the shape of the spools sitting up on my cupboard together.

they are also playing their part in these. more pics to come next week. happy friday all!

Yesterday I took the opportunity to view 'art, love & life: ethel carrick and e phillips fox' an exhibition at the queensland art gallery.

This exhibition "tells the story of an artistic marriage and partnership, one of the most significant in Australian art. Both were painters of modern life at the turn of the last century, and this exhibition will explore the inflections of life and society in their work, from bustling scenes of markets and beaches, to intimate views of families, women and children."

It is difficult to enter into the keyboard how breathtaking some of these paintings are in real life. My explanation cannot do it justice (neither can a printed copy of them on paper). To see them up close is truly something. I don't get the opportunity to visit galleries and see artwork of this calibre very often, but I am truly glad I did so.

"And Fox always had 'atmosphere' - a firm grasp of the intangibles of mist and light and heat and coolth. He'll stand a yard from his canvas and pitch into it's life a hunk of the very air he is breathing".  Bulletin, 1908.

as the sun was setting on sunday afternoon of our king of the mountain market, this little guy made me smile.
so sweet ... i love the shape of the truck. it is a 1960's Commer BF imported from the UK - so about the same age as sunny. you can read more about them and hire them here!

And a big 'hullo' and thank-you to all those who stopped by our stall on sunday to chat and shop. we had a really good day and enjoyed meeting new locals, watching the race , enjoying good local coffee(s) and seeing vintage goodies going to new homes.

A super big thanks to my little sis who came early to help me set-up... thanks for getting out of bed early on a cold sunday morning! x

Here is a funny little peek into the behind-the-scenes of some of the pictures that make it onto my website and in my on-line store like this.

Oh it looks so peaceful and lady-like...cups of tea, white linen and pretty bunting flags...
but there is a little fellow who sticks nearby... just out of shot... keeping very busy all the time. Painting, building, collecting mud and rocks for his tonka trunk. Here he is...

He is also nearby on many of my projects fixing up things for the shop, hardware store trips, op-shops, sewing sessions, market days, furniture deliveries and our coffee fixes.

We do not always see eye-to-eye (who does with a three year old?), but I love him and what he brings to my life.

A stack of Modern Technical Drawing Pads and a Junior Workshop manual found recently. My interest in them stems from a love of papers, well-sharpened pencils and neat entries into notebooks... (perhaps I should have taken graphics at school).

My plan? Paired with graph paper & string, they make for some smart gift-wrap ideas. Sort of man-ly, but also vintage cool. Perhaps you could try something similar for your next gift to your Beau.

Today it's a little bit of a dichotomy.

Happy to see my mum and dad catch a train that will link them to planes, buses, boats and trains on the other side of the world. Happy to see two oldies doing what they love and what they have worked so hard for - an adventurous retirement.

Sad? Yeah just a little. Sad to say good-bye (for now). Grateful for all the help they have given in the last few months.

It's just happy-sad and it's okay.

what better way to put a finishing touch to your end-of-financial-year documents than with a retro dymo labeller?

although i am not so sure these will necessarily impress my accountant.

found three of these little beauties at my local red cross shop a few months back and they have been waiting patiently for their feature here on friday finds. complete with a huge tower of ribbon cartridges (about 30 all up) in an assortment of colours this will keep my label-making habit satisfied for some time!

of course 'very important documents' need to be spelt correctly, which is easy to muck up in the excitement of punching out the letters to make your word. oops.

Good morning!

Today I am pleased to share a little with you about the POP-UP SHOP we hosted a week or so ago.

'Two Golden Hours' was a collaboration between my sister, Kristina and I. We wanted to create a unique retail event, a destination of beauty and time of retreat.

Yandina Station was the venue we selected, and what a stunning location and presence this homestead created.

We assembled a large collection of vintage and re-claimed wares in one of the sheds adjacent to the homestead. We also set up sunny on the lawn to house more vintage goods and pair her with the gorgeous collection of clothing by little laundry.

Inside the homestead we had a collection of beautiful handmade wares by guest artisans including;

In the library room of the homestead we had shelves and crates stacked with vintage books.

Yandina Station created a stunning cafe, with amazing food and coffee, drinks, and cream teas. Just delicious!

Guests were also treated to wonderful live music by two local artists, Ayla Scanlan and Coastal Jazz.

What an amazing couple of days it was. We were thrilled to have so many people come along and visit our shop, and enjoy their time at Two Golden Hours.

After a brief time off-air (blogger went awry late last week), we are back with our first Monday Joy for a while.

One of our new favourite local spots is a lookout we have visited a few times in recent weeks. Some friendly locals we chatted with last week told us their kids used to say 'lets go to the top of the world'. So now we have adopted that name too. It is a beautiful drive to the mountain and such a lovely spot on a sunny autumn day.

'twas a lovely day to wander up to the post office and collect some much anticipated goods for our upcoming event. lots of things to do and so much in my brain that it was a refreshing break to get out in the sunshine and see if my parcel had arrived.

a little like this sweet find. only this time, i wish my feet could slip inside them... alas, they are size four & a half.

the soft, black leather of these flats is adorable, but the stamped leather soles are so smooth and what makes them so quaint. what you can hardly see now (from so much dancing?), is the etching of a ballerina on the ball of the sole.

a sweet friday find indeed. sweeter still, they'll be appearing soon at two golden hours amongst our collection of reclaimed wares.

hello everybody.

just dropping by to say hi and let you know i am still here. has been a really busy, exciting and at times, slightly nervous week. lots of 'good' things happening which we'll be sharing more of soon.

but in the mean time, here she is! flying high in the workshop. being fitted with new axles, wheels and tyres. you could say she was getting pimped, but i'm not sure that's really her style.

glad to say she is safely back in our shed at home and ready to hit the beach markets this sunday april 3.

sad to say that she has become a home for many, many gypsy ants who have decided she makes a great location for their nests with all the rainy weather we have been having. grrr. have tried lots of things to keep them away, but to no avail.

anyway, hope you've had a great week and i look forward to being back in bloggy land next week.

My heart leapt a little in my chest when I spotted this beauty. A rustic bentwood painted a sea green.

The iconic wicker seat has long gone and the gentleman who sold it to me checked if I really wanted it as it had a bit of a wobble. Yes. I really do want it.

Had a little look under the seat once I got home to see what they had re-fashioned the seat with. What should it be but pieces from a 14lb Tea Box by 'Edwards & Co'.

This little gem comes to us from a friend who found it (and some others) 20 odd years ago. They have been sitting in storage since and now I am on a little mission to discover more about them.

A little bit like this find... I am going to see if anyone can guess what's in the box? 

But aside from the contents, I also love the textures and the aging on the box, the worn handles and buckles. Old stamps that means the box travelled far and wide in it's lifetime.

Our last day in Melbourne was a really special time as a family.

We drove to a few family history spots South East of the City, where my Great Grandfather lived and was Mayor of the region. We found the street named after him and took lots of photos. Not an overly inspiring street I must say, but part of our history which makes it special. We also discovered a donut and baked-goods factory on 'our' street which we bought some goodies from just for fun.

Took our takeaway lunch to Black Rock and shared the food with the seagulls.

Soaked up the beauty of the sea and the sunshine.

Just a precious window of time that will stay with me.

PS. I forgot to mention in the original post that it was actually Valentine's Day, and that Black Rock was where my Dad proposed to Mum 45 years ago, and the pink jelly cakes are Mum's favourite!

This week, the dining room has become the cutting room. Just one aspect of home-based businesses... they tend to take over one's whole space. Sometimes housemates (and I) get frustrated at the piles of things, fabric, and organised mess in this little house! But, somedays like today, you can spread out 'cause there's no one else around.

While I am pressing, laying patterns, pinning and cutting, it occurs to me that sewing is allot like painting.

There is a significant period of preparation before one can sit down at the machine and generate some stitches. Like all the cleaning, filling and sanding prior to painting. Sometimes you want to get to the creative bit... now.

But, a good friend once told me 'measure twice, cut once'. That means lots of attention to detail and taking one's time to do it well. Patience and perseverance. Reminds me of a post about handmade that I enjoyed here.

One heartfelt prayer from one little person offered for so many who have lost so much this year.

Can anyone tell me why my gardenia bush has just started producing flowers at this time of year? I am not sure, but I am grateful for the bonus season of perfect white, perfumed petals in my garden, and now in my home.

This is t.h.e. market to get to if you are ever in Melbourne. Camberwell Markets, each Sunday morning. I had not been for about five years and I had forgotten just how good it is. Rows and rows of sellers with excellent antiques, vintage items and collections. Plenty of second-hand clothing stalls too, with people having little car boot sales.

We had just under two hours to scoot around and I knew I would not get to see it all. So we took our time and enjoyed looking around with Ms K and her little people who came to meet us there. Also got to meet the lovely Tamarah at her stall, who had a gorgeous blue bicycle that I could definitely not (but wished) I could've have taken home on the plane.

A pleasant way to spend a sunday morning - would love to do it again.

Here's a little spy into the goings on here in the workroom/office/studio/mess that is my workspace. Hidden away today pressing, stitching and snipping. Some lovely ribbons, trims and cotton tapes collected for the past few months for new handmade pieces.

Must stay on task now, and not get tempted to wander off gazing at other's creations and goings on here in the big www.

This couple brought a smile to my face. They reminded me of my Gran and Pa. Holding hands in the surf. Still smiling. I wondered about their story.

Then I noticed the words on the gentleman's swimwear. Another reason to smile.

For those who do not receive our e-news each month, just a little post to update you on a couple of things.

Firstly, I am taking a break from the markets at Peregian Beach this month. You can read more here, but that means our next dates are April 3 & 17.

Secondly, our on-line shop is still closed as we work on new pieces. We'll let you know when we're back.

A few very pleasing 'finds' this week. This one tops the list.

Found at auction, two postcard albums full of cards from the early 1900's. Many notes and thank-you's all addressed to a Miss F Daybell. Flossie Daybell. Just lovely.
